I gave a try to DaveJones's kernel 2.6.16-1.2064_FC5 binaries.
The following items work fine with the FC5 Kernel: 2.6.16-1.2064_FC5 :)
* nvidia driver (see howto) drivers
* qemu 0.8.0-1and kqemu 0.7.2-1
* vmplayer :
Getting VMware-player-1.0.1-19317.i386.rpm work on Fedora Core 5 'Bordeaux':
1. Get the rpm of the free VMWare Player
2. Download the linux image e.g VMware-player-1.0.1-19317.i386.rpm
3. Install it with rpm -ivh VMware-player-1.0.1-19317.i386.rpm
4. Then its time to download the patch: wget -c http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/vmware-any-any-update98.tar.gz
5. Extract the archive: tar xvf vmware-any-any-update98.tar.gz
6. cd vmware-any-any-update98
7. Complete the installation by: su -c "./runme.pl"

The configuration will continue, but you should re-run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
after you fix the super-server.

please update your kernel to http://people.redhat.com/davej/kernels/Fedora/FC5/RPMS.kernel/
then install vmware.
The kernel 2.6.15-1.2054.FC5 do not allow compilation of non-gpl modules
Getting the same error for 2.6.16-1.2074_FC5. None of the inetd or xinetd were installed by default. Is there a workaround? Thanks.

I've installed xinetd (I thought it was installed by default) and now vmware runs well (with the standard kernel)
I have used VMWare workstation for some time to run windows under fedora when need be, but FC5 is a problem child and it was a B!tch. First it had the address space issue, so I commented out a few lines in vmware-config.pl and fixed that, but then compiling failed. I downloaded the http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/vmware-any-any-update101.tar.gz and ran it, it asked for a bunch of things to be overwritten so I backed those up, ran it again and ran vmware-config.pl, and shazzam, i got vmware workstation working under FC5 (damn FC5 has some issues still)

There is probably a slight difference in the kernel configuration between the
set of C header files you specified and your running kernel. You may want to
rebuild a kernel based on that directory, or specify another directory.
Yum install xinitd resolved this issue - interestingly none of the betas needed this - nor does workstation
